'Inspiring Schools' conference and workshop, Cambridge

'Planning for Active Participation: the Agenda for Development'
March 17th 2008
University of Cambridge Faculty of Education
A one-day conference and workshop for local schools

How did this conference and workshop come about?

A new movement is being established of people who want to work together to promote participatory approaches in education. This includes students, teachers, local authorities, governors, parents, researchers and national organisations. The aim is to connect together all the energy and good practice so that it can have greater impact. The University of Cambridge has a reputation for cutting edge work in this area, engaging directly with schools with a commitment to develop active participation. This event aims to bring this energy together.

‘Inspiring Schools: the Movement for Active Participation in Education’ aims to promote and develop:

o A climate and ethos in schools where the views and ideas of all stakeholders are valued, including school students, staff and parents.
o Approaches to learning and teaching based on interaction and dialogue.
o Children and young people’s active involvement in decision-making within education (individual and collective).

The movement is working in conjunction with other organisations to make this happen e.g. by developing:

o A central communication point and e-newsletter giving succinct information and signposting to other organisations
o Events where pupils, teachers and governors work in partnership
o The facility for people to share practice, make contact and give encouragement (e.g. online)
o A forum for key player organisations to meet and explore strategic collaboration alongside young people and educators.
